MITRE is contributing Caldera to the The Apache Software Foundation’s Incubator as Apache Caldera (Incubating). “This next phase for Caldera reflects MITRE’s approach to innovation: develop impactful capabilities, prove them through operational use, and enable them to scale through open collaboration. Mark Peters’ career began with a geology degree from Auburn University and grew into a life’s work applying science and technology in service to the nation.    A foundation of curiosity and analytical rigor has guided him across national laboratories, federal leadership, and now MITRE.    His journey is a reminder to graduates that a STEM education can be more than a field of study. It can be a foundation for leadership, public service, and impact at national scale.

New momentum is driving warfighting acquisition improvements, but lasting progress will take time and requires a clear understanding of where challenges remain. MITRE’s 2026 State of Warfighting Acquisition Survey, drawing on feedback from 1,200+ stakeholder professionals and industry subject matter experts, points to growing confidence that recent changes will accelerate speed and expand opportunity.
