Driving is so much more than access to do the things you HAVE to do.
It provides the freedom to do the things you WANT to do!
Driving allows people to visit friends, watch a sunset, pick out their own groceries, or grab an ice cream cone on a hot summer afternoon.
As OT practitioners, we know how impactful community mobility is. It’s solidly in our scope of practice, whether you’re a driver rehab specialist or a clinician in general practice.
May is National Mobility Awareness Month, a great time for every OT practitioner to assess how they support their clients’ mobility, including throughout the community!
Every OT practitioner can and should address driving on some level.
Here’s how:
Ask about driving during your evaluations. Get their PLOF, ask about accidents, ask if they want to get behind the wheel again if their recovery makes it possible.
Remember, asking about driving doesn’t mean you will get them back behind the wheel.
You’re creating GOALS that they can work toward, building a case for continued insurance coverage, and ensuring they get proper referrals upon discharge so they can achieve maximum independence in all areas… including driving.
👩🏽⚕️ Do you know who the Driver Rehabilitation Specialists are in your area?
🚘 Have you checked out the local dealerships that could help with vehicle modifications?
🏥 Is there a driver rehabilitation program in your region, even if it’s hours away?
When ALL occupational therapy practitioners address driving, more clients will gain access to this valued IADL and the freedom to live life to the fullest.
