Community-maintained · Continuing where Roo Code left off

Built-in modes

Different tasks.
Different rules.

Each mode shapes how the agent approaches your task. Switch modes to get different perspectives and workflows.

Think before you code

Plans complex changes without making edits. Outputs strategy documents and file maps you can review before any code is written.

Example: Plan a refactor of the auth system to use JWT tokens instead of sessions.

Create custom modes for your workflow. Security review mode. Documentation mode. Whatever you need.

Built for real work

Power when you need it.
Control when you don't.

Plus everything you expect: multi-file editing, context management, customizable settings, and full BYOK support for any provider.

Review before it runs

Every change lands as a diff. You see exactly what's changing before it touches your codebase. No silent rewrites.

Extend with tools

Connect external tools via Model Context Protocol. Databases, APIs, custom resources — all available to the agent.

Works headless

Run Zoo Code from the terminal. Integrate into CI, automate reviews, chain with scripts. No VS Code window required.

Scales with you

Semantic search and partial-file analysis keep Zoo Code fast even in massive repositories. No more context window anxiety.

The Story

Roo Code is shutting down.
Zoo Code picks up where they left off.

In April 2026, the Roo Code team announced they were archiving the project to focus on Roomote. A few of us from the community decided to keep it alive. Zoo Code is built on Roo Code's foundation — same features, same settings, same license.

If you used Roo Code, welcome home.

Community

Zoo Code is open source.

This project exists because people care about it. Every PR matters. Every issue filed improves it. If you used Roo Code and want it to survive, the best thing you can do is show up.

We'd especially love to hear from former Roo Code contributors — you already know the codebase better than anyone. Come find us on Discord or open a PR directly. No pitch deck required.

Former Roo Code contributor? You're very welcome here. Your knowledge of the codebase is valuable and we'd love your help shaping where this goes. Reach out on Discord — no formalities needed.

FAQ

Common questions

Zoo Code is a community fork of Roo Code. It has the same features, the same settings structure, and the same Apache 2.0 license. Your existing Roo Code configurations should work with minimal changes.

Yes. Export your settings from Roo Code and import them into Zoo Code. Custom modes, keyboard shortcuts, and model configurations all carry over.

Yes. The extension is free and open source forever. If you bring your own API keys, you only pay your provider. If you use Zoo Gateway, you pay for credits — no subscription required.

Zoo Gateway is our optional unified API. Instead of managing API keys for each provider, you buy Zoo Gateway credits and access all supported models through a single account. It's completely optional — you can still bring your own keys if you prefer.

Zoo Code is maintained by the community — developers who used and loved Roo Code. Contributions are welcome.
