Google TV is about to get a huge upgrade in the form of its own live content. While it is unclear when the service will be available, the new information sheds light on the types of channels that will be available when they are available.
Again, 9to5Google It worked its magic by slicing the newly released APK of the Google TV app downloaded directly from the Google Play Store. By decompiling the APK, he found a line indicating that there will be 50 entertainment channels. The line says, “Enjoy 50 channels of live TV without the need to sign up, subscribe or download.” While the 50-channel bit is important, the last staple about not having to “subscribe, subscribe, or download” is the real gem. This piece of the puzzle indicates that the upcoming service will be different than what’s available on Google TV right now.
Currently, to watch content on Google TV, users have to subscribe and download apps for their preferred service providers. Since the uncovered line indicates that downloading or recording will not be necessary, we can conclude that the width of 50 channels will be completely different from what is currently on the platform. If this is not enough, the player indicates “Google TV Channels”.
Moreover, the description of the application talks about the types of content that will be available at launch, as the service offers “news, sports, movies and shows”. Fortunately, we won’t have to guess the types of shows, as there’s also an in-app graphic showing the 30 or so channels that will be available. You can check out the image above and see if you recognize any of your favourites. Again, it is not known when this service will go live, but for now, existing Google TV users will have to rely on supported services such as Pluto TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Philo.
What do you think of the upcoming new live channels? Is there anything you like?
