Instagram gets new age verification features

Instagram has announced the addition of some age verification features to its app, and that includes the ability for other people to verify your age.

There is also a new feature where your age can be verified using a video selfie, and they have also announced a partnership with Yoti for age verification.

Starting today, we’re testing new options for people on Instagram to verify their age, starting with people who live in the United States. If someone tries to edit their Instagram birthday from under 18 to 18 or older, we’ll ask them to verify their age using one of three options: upload their ID, video selfie, or ask mutual friends. Check their age. We test this so we can make sure that teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group. We’re also partnering with Yoti, an online age verification company, to help ensure people’s privacy.

We ask that people be at least 13 years old to sign up for Instagram. In some countries, our minimum age is higher. When we know if someone is a teenager (13-17), we provide them with age-appropriate experiences such as putting them in private accounts by default, preventing unwanted communication from adults they don’t know, and limiting the choices advertisers have to reach them through ads.
