The Nothing Phone (1) has arrived with the promise of challenging traditional Android, flashing lights and all, but as far as the Android 13 update goes, it’s the same old story.
The company, founded by OnePlus alumnus Carl Pei, won’t bring Android 13 to its first phone until late June 2023. This is despite the phone running an experience very close to the release of Android 12, which has traditionally been the fast track for updates.
The London-based company said in a statement that it wanted to set the software on its phone before launching the update.
“We are always working hard to improve the Phone 1 user experience,” the company said in a statement shared with Android Authority. To ensure this, OS updates will be made available for regular download. Regarding Android 13, this will be launched for Phone 1 users in the first half of 2023. Before the release, we want to set the software upgrade with Nothing’s hardware. We will be sure to tell you more information.
The news was made public in a Twitter post from Pei last week, when he shrugged off a question about the update by saying, “The product is more than just its specs, features, and version numbers” (via The Verge).
So far, Android phone makers like Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, and Huawei have detailed their plans to follow Pixel phones into Android 13. These companies have released beta versions of their custom user interface, which is built on Android 13.
Relative lack of experience with these means it’s probably wiser to make sure everything is perfect rather than rushing through a flawed, reputation-damaging update.
In our review of Nothing Phone (1), we gave the phone a four-star score for the premium design, 120Hz screen, and value for money.
