EVGA just slashed the price of its base RTX 3090 Ti graphics card to $1,000 less than its US MSRP, in a clear sign that high-end GPU prices are still dropping rapidly.
Yes, a Twitter resident found out that there is a thousand dollars of FTW3 gaming model (Opens in a new tab)which has a recommended price of $2,150 and is now $1,150 at the card maker’s online store, so it’s now pretty close to half the price.
Holy crap, but Jay said to buy now? pic.twitter.com/G96qqouSqHAugust 6, 2022
The FTW3 Ultra Gaming model isn’t much more expensive at $1,200, as it comes with a slightly higher boost speed (so it’s definitely another option if your base FTW3 graphics card is out of stock).
Note that the official MSRP for the RTX 3090 Ti is $2,000 (£1,879, AU$2,499), but EVGA has put a slight premium on the FTW3 versions due to the enhanced cooling systems that allow the GPU to run a bit faster.
Analysis: to buy or wait?
To put that price in perspective with the rest of the range, EVGA’s RTX 3080 Ti runs at $1,100 right now, so you can get the 3090 Ti for only fifty dollars, which makes absolutely no sense for those who want a top-of-the-line EVGA Ampere graphics card sending in The current time (assuming the PC case, thermostat, and PSU can handle the 3090 Ti, of course).
As you might remember, Nvidia recently officially lowered the RTX 3090 Ti to $1,500 (along with price cuts for other Ampere graphics cards), but the main GPU seems to deteriorate quickly even from this low. At Newegg, you can buy a Zotac 3090 Ti for $1240 now, for example, but the EVGA price cuts that by nearly another hundred dollars.
Something we’ve been hearing constantly in the grapes lately is that Nvidia’s partners have a surplus stock of RTX 3000 cards to clear, and that seems to be a clear indication that this may indeed be the case.
It’s definitely a big price cut by EVGA, and if the next generation of Lovelace GPUs get close to launching now, the first one out the door should be the RTX 4090 – so it makes sense that the biggest discounts will apply to the top-end RTX 3090 and 3090 Ti First, these suggestions will quickly become less tempting as the timeframe for Lovelace’s release approaches.
What could happen now is that more graphics card manufacturers drop their prices on the 3090 Ti (and possibly other high-end Nvidia models), and we could see a race to sell them — most likely. However, considering about half the price already, there should be a limit to how low things can go, and at its current price, the EVGA RTX 3090 Ti doesn’t look too bad to say the least.
On the other hand, when Lovelace arrives, rumor has it that the RTX 4070 could be equal to the 3090 Ti (or maybe even a touch faster) – but then it’s expected to be the most popular model for Lovelace’s high-end offerings, so buying it at MSRP can be tricky (or even buy it at all, maybe at first). Especially if the 4070 offers as much of an incredible price tag to showcase the performance value as the speculation seems to suggest.
And with the RTX 4070 likely not arriving this year, another rumor says, grabbing the RTX 3090 Ti when it gets cheaper might not be a bad move after all — at least for those who don’t have the patience to see how Lovelace’s rollout and stock-placement issue is resolved. We still advise ourselves to wait, but then again, we will understand those who want to make the leap now…
