The ChatGPT app for Mac now integrates with coding applications such as Xcode, VS Code, TextEdit and Terminal, simplifying the workflow for developers to copy and paste code from coding applications into ChatGPT.
When ChatGPT gains permission to interact with applications such as Xcode through the new “Use Application” feature, selected code can be sent directly to ChatGPT along with prompts. TechCrunch There is a demo of this feature and describes how it works:
In a demo at TechCrunch, an OpenAI employee opened the ChatGPT application and an Xcode environment containing a simple project that simulated the solar system – albeit one that lacked Earth. The employee selected an Xcode tab in ChatGPT, which told the AI chatbot to view the app and prompted the chatbot to “add missing planets.” The chatbot was able to complete its task by writing a line of code to represent the Earth that matched the rest of the project format.
Back in October, GitHub integrated Copilot into Xcode, which provides coding assistance within the application. ChatGPT’s integration isn’t that deep, and it can’t be coded in Xcode. ChatGPT instead uses the macOS Accessibility API as a screen reader, allowing the application to read text, which also means it cannot interpret images or videos.
New features in ChatGPT for Mac are available to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Teams users starting today, with enterprise and education support coming in the near future. Going forward, OpenAI plans to bring this integration to other applications.
