This week, Silicon Motion unveiled its latest innovation in the form of a user-programmable MonTitan PCIe Gen5x4 SSD featuring an all-new, purpose-built ASIC and FW architecture. MonTitan was created to provide users with a high-performance PCIe Gen5 programmable platform using a third-generation Silicon Motion NVMe controller.
The MonTitan SM8366 ASIC is a dual-port PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe controller with 16 channels supporting up to 2400MT/s. The SM8366 delivers fast 4K sequential (>14GB/s) and random (>3.0M IOPS) SSD performance and has a 40-bit scalable single/dual channel DDR4-3200/DDR5-4800 DRAM interface.
MonTitan SSD features proprietary technology from Silicon Motion:
PerformaShape delivers ASIC-based QoS clusters using HW isolation to ensure maximum black and white performance while maximizing individual user defined performance elements (QOS, Latency, RR/RW, Power).
NANDCommand increases enterprise performance for next-generation NAND architectures with exceptional LDPC error correction and endurance extension for QLC and beyond.
“SSD storage solutions are evolving to meet new challenges in data centers that require changes in storage platforms and operating models,” said Nelson Doan, senior vice president of marketing, research and development at Silicon Motion. “Our MonTitan SSD solution is an innovative PCIe Gen5 SSD platform designed to meet the unique requirements of today’s data centers while providing flexibility and the ability to program to meet the evolving standards of tomorrow.”
User-programmable SSD
“Silicon Motion’s launch of the MonTitan SSD solutions platform provides an interesting development avenue with its multi-layered FW stack and flexible architecture to enable application-oriented solutions such as QLC and ZNS SSDs. Alibaba Cloud is interested in more of the from the evaluation of these solutions.” The high-performance SM8366 with MonTitan platform unleashes the potential previously limited by an SSD storage architecture, providing flexible, highly integrated solutions to enable a new standard for SSD design for the data center.”
Next-generation technologies such as PCIe 5.0, OCP Datacenter NVMe SSD Specification, and E1.S represent ultra-wide-ranging needs to enable large-scale performance, heat, and management. The Silicon Motion platform supports MonTitan PCIe 5.0, OCP Datacenter NVMe 2.0 SSD Specification, and E1.S to meet the demands of the next generation of hyperbands,” said Ross Stenfort, hardware system engineer, Meta.
