In a fun turn of events today that is likely to be a bug, the update to Google Meet (previously the Duo app) on Android brings back the Google Duo icon. As such, you now have two ways to run the same app.
By merging the two video calling shows into one, Google considered “Meet” the trademark left. However, in terms of implementation, Google Duo is the app left on people’s phones and is updated with a new home screen and features from both services. This is because Duo has a much larger install base (5 billion vs. 500 million).
At the beginning of August, an update (172) began rolling out that replaced the blue Duo icon and introduced the four-color Meet version. After updating and opening the app, Duo disappears from the launcher.
Today version 173 brings back the Google Duo icon for a reason. As such, you have Both the Duo and Meet . logos In the app drawer, both launch the new Unified Meet-Duo experience.
Modernization: Google tells us this evening that it intentionally brought back the Duo icon with this Android update. It is intended to help people who search/type “Duo” to launch the application. The company is facilitating the upgrade for end users.
It’s a baffling turn of events Most likely an error on the part of Google. For regular users of the service, the company has already made it clear to go through a prominent splash screen and a banner that you must interact with to remove it.
Having said that, it is possible for the company to see enough confusion that this change is no accident. (People express their anger about this immigration on the Meet list.)
Google has not yet updated Duo’s Play Store listing with the new brand. The company also plans to update duo.google.com with the Meet brand. Meanwhile, Meet has a green icon to indicate that it will eventually be phased out for enterprise users, although that original experience remains in Gmail as its tab.
