Don’t hold your breath if you’re hoping to play Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora before the next movie arrives. This is not likely to happen. Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment delayed Avatar until 2023 or 2024. The developers blamed this setback on “ongoing restrictions” affecting game production across the industry. However, to reassure gamers, Ubisoft said it remains “committed” to creating a next-generation game and sees the James Cameron franchise as a “multi-year opportunity.”
There are also other projects facing delays or cancellations. Stephen Totilo of Axios said that Ubisoft has canceled the Battle Royale brawler game Ghost Recon Frontline and Splinter Cell VR. The company also dropped two unannounced games and postponed a low-level “featured” game from the 2022-2023 release window to 2023-2024.
These decisions come as Ubisoft is trying to reverse its fortunes. It saw “better-than-expected” sales of the Assassin’s Creed series and Rainbow Six Siege in the first quarter, despite net bookings down 10 percent year-over-year. Ubisoft’s business isn’t quite thriving, and delays in games like Frontiers of Pandora are adding pressure to cut costs even more. We hope they won’t be late.
