WeChat has introduced key support for its iOS app, allowing users outside of China to log into the country’s main messaging platform using Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode instead of a traditional password.
Apple introduced keys in iOS 16, which provide a more secure and convenient authentication method. Instead of entering a password, users can quickly access their WeChat account through biometric verification on the device.
Keys provide enhanced security by eliminating common vulnerabilities associated with traditional passwords, such as phishing attacks and credential theft. Because authentication is performed directly on the user’s device using biometric data or their device password, passwords cannot be leaked or intercepted.
To set up a key, WeChat users need to have an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 or later, and enable iCloud Keychain and two-step verification for their Apple account. According to the new WeChat support document, users can enable this feature through WeChat’s account and security settings.
Tencent-owned WeChat joins a growing list of major platforms adopting key technology, including Google, PayPal, Microsoft and TikTok. The feature is currently limited to WeChat users outside of China, and there’s no word yet on if or when it will be expanded to the domestic Chinese version of the app.
