Google Search briefly encountered an issue that lengthened page load times, errors, and empty search results.
Tonight, users across the US began experiencing issues with Google search, with confirmed reports of bugs and long loading times on both the East and West Coast. According to DownDetector, the surge in reported problems began around 6pm PST before surging around 6:30pm.
Sometimes affected people may be presented with an internal error 500 or 502 when trying to perform a search. Even Google Home (Google.com) seems to be taking longer to load. Notably, other Google services such as Gmail, Play Store, and YouTube do not appear to be affected at the moment.
In the minutes before the errors appeared, some of our team members noticed that fairly straightforward Google queries took roughly two seconds to complete, versus a typical response time of less than one second.
Update 6:50 PM: It appears as if the issue with Google Search has been resolved, as evidenced by a similarly sharp drop in reports at DownDetector. However, we will be monitoring the situation closely this evening.
